From the makers of Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights, and Dungeon Siege, comes a new title in the Fallout series. If you've played Fallout 3 it uses the same engine for this game for graphics, with only a little rework for lighting effects, so you won't need to overhaul your system in order to play this game.

FONV_Skill_Machine.jpg

Set in the Wild West after a nuclear apocalypse occurred, you start the game off as a courier for a delivery company who is captured, robbed, and finally shot. You're saved by an old man and nursed back to health. Instead of taking growing up and taking a test, you'll be asked questions by the old man, and then you'll use the machine below to change your attributes and pick your skills. After that you're off to do whatever you want. You can be as good or as bad as you want and be rewarded for each way because of the built in reputation systems. If you start to attack towns then the townsfolk in the general area will start to become hostile, but if you save them they'll like you even better and will help you.

Fallout New Vegas also includes some new upgrades over Fallout 3. These include Hardcore Mode, Iron sights on guns, Customization of your weapons, more weapons, and finally more perks. Hardcore Mode makes the game much harder and difficult in comparison to non-Hardcore Mode. Ammo has weight, you have to actually drink water or you'll dehydrate, Medpacs don't restore crippled limbs, you need sleep, and finally Medpacs also don't heal instantaneously.

Fallout New Vegas' addition of special ammo and modifications that you can use on your weapons adds some more diversity to your experience. Also, you'll explore some memorable locations from the Mojave Desert in the game, including the Las Vegas Strip, Area 51, Dinkie the Dinosaur Motel (Pictured Above), The Helios One power-plant, and the Hoover Dam. Check out New Vegas this holiday season on PC, Xbox 360, or Playstation 3.

In your reviews I note that WoW was online only (didn't I?). Otherwise, all these titles can be played solo? I ask due to the fact that I travel quite a bit, and without a laptop at that, so I don't really have much time for building up much team play following.

Yes, I know it sounds dumb, but this is the main reason I haven't bought a new game in years. It's about time though.

depend on your tastes, my preferences are:
Fallout NV: yes. some crazy fans state they go ap tu 200 hours or more IN SOLO. 1st for me from the list. i'm playing it right now. (try to compare with stalker series, metro2033 and other immersive games, HL series maybe to far but for me the etalon. so yes a good game, IMO those mentioned are better, but it works just fine)
Starcraft WoL: yes. good campain, not too big but ok.
Call of Duty BO: yes. been there done that. despite de good or bad rumours, it's a good game.
Tom Clancy, wow: didnt try them, but based on previous releases, yes.
Travel a lot? ok, but prepare with a powerful enough laptop: go Fallout or Starcraft.

I dont want to criticize this review. i guess it's based on sales or some. otherwise games top it's very personal.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm and H.A.W.X.2 both require internet, so if you don't have a reliable internet connection I would suggest sticking to one of the other games. Fallout New Vegas will probably give you the most bang for your buck in terms of solo game play.

This is what I'll be playing, and right now it's Nehrim the free addon to Oblivion which I feel is even better than Oblivion. These guys could have sold it on the market and made money.48k

We bought COD:BO. It's a fun 'FPS'. However, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the 'gold standard' for FPS's... not even close. If I had to decide between the two, it would be BBC2... far superior...

I still love and play BF:BC2, and consider it the best FPS currently available. On the other hand, I've been playing CoD:BO for a month now and it's finally grown on me. I still think it's full of cheats and hacks, and it's totally unrealistic, but it's fun to customize so many aspects of the game. Too bad Medal of Honor was such a lousy game, because it wasn't worth the time I spent on it.

Cheats and hacks? I've been playing it (a lot) since release and not come across a single hacker. What most people think are cheaters are in actual fact just players who have learned how to use the UAV/motion scanners/blackbirds in the way they were intended.

On the other hand, optimisation and textures are a pile of wank, the spawn system is laughable, knife horribly overpowered and several guns are utterly redundant. It's still a good game, just a bit...flawed.

codehook.com / callofdutyhacks.com thses are just a few. Each of them have 1000's upon 1000's of subscribers. You know what the bets part is? They don't get caught very often and if they do, they obtain a key generator and get right back online again. So soak up this educational moment and know......................hackers in the COD world are out there.

SWAT ....... Ex-COD Hacker.

I'm not denying there are hackers at all, seen several vids of people using walls already but considering I've not come across a single one I'm either very lucky or they're rare.

May I ask why you (or did) hack on CoD? I mean, playing computer games is already seen as pretty sad, cheating at them seems even more pathetic...

Who considers it a stigma to play computer games? I've never met anyone that thought I was odd or antisocial for playing games, and I'm a pretty social person.

Are the kids at school picking on you Adam? :p

Heh, luckily I'm plenty old enough to be out of our wonderful public school system.
But come on you must admit that gaming is not exactly seen as the coolest hobby ever, attempt to start up a conversation about it with any normal (non-geeky) person over the age of about 18 and you're likely to make them run for the hills.

Not necessarily so Adam. I'm a grampa and I've been playing computer games since the early 70's. And I know a grandma who's kids just got her hooked on Battlefield online; she's getting her own XBox for Christmas. I'd never have called her geeky, ever, never, ever.

Lighten up. Enjoy. And Merry Christmas.

It'd be awesome to have grandparents like you. Unfortunately whilst mine are still great fun they're rather typical for their age of not being the most technologically adept.

Perhaps I was just born into the wrong part of the world but gaming is still seen as a somewhat geeky passtime around here. But then it is Essex...

Most people in the UK don't know much about computers, I know because I'm from the UK. When I talk about games they ask which console I play on and when I say PC they laugh... When they see the level of detail their smug smile soon departs. It is due to ignorance and lack of knowledge that people think PC's are geeky. When their PC goes wrong they soon want my help though...

Yep, I pretty much feel the same way. Best part is when they want to compare games between consoles and PC.

I've seen maybe 10 hackers so far. I've had to ban three or four of those ten from servers I admin. Didn't take long for them to get around VAC (for now) but at least it's not ridiculous like MW2 (yet)...

Imo, Treyarch is still playing catch-up to Infinity ward. Most people don't even know they're done by different developers. I loved Modern Warfare 2, but I also played it on Xbox Live for the largest chunk of time and not PC. I haven't played much PC FPS games since Counter Strike 1.6 and Source Days. Has anybody seen the news about Gearbox picking up Duke Nukem Forever? That will definitely bring back some nostalgia from Duke Nukem 3 days.
